Academic Service

Overview

I contribute extensively to the academic community through doctoral examination, research funding review, editorial service, and leadership roles in international organisations and conferences. These activities reflect my commitment to advancing the fields of building performance analysis, building physics, simulation, and built‑environment research more broadly.

My service work spans the UK, Europe, North America, and Asia, and includes significant experience with both academic and applied research evaluation.

External Examination (PhD/EngD/doctoral degrees)

I serve as external examiner, opponent, and doctoral committee member for PhD, EngD and related doctoral programmes across the world.

My examination experience covers more than 40 doctoral theses, at institutions such as:

  • University College London
  • Eindhoven University of Technology
  • Georgia Institute of Technology
  • Technical University of Denmark
  • Sapienza Università di Roma
  • Cardiff University
  • University of Bath
  • Seoul National University
  • TU Berlin
  • Politecnico di Torino

Areas of Expertise for Doctoral Examination

I examine doctoral work in areas including:

  • Building performance analysis and evaluation
  • Building performance simulation and modelling
  • Thermal and energy aspects of building physics
  • Performance gaps between predicted and measured outcomes
  • Monitoring of buildings in operation
  • Intelligent computing and digital methods
  • Simulation‑supported design and decision‑making

Examination Approach

My role is to ensure that doctoral work is:

  • Methodologically rigorous
  • Conceptually grounded
  • Evidence‑based
  • Positioned appropriately within the international research landscape

I am available for international examination appointments, both in‑person and online, subject to institutional requirements.

Research Funding Proposal Review and Evaluation

I regularly review research proposals for major national and international funding bodies, including engineering, energy, sustainability, and interdisciplinary programmes.
These reviews range from individual proposals to participation in peer‑review colleges and expert panels.

Typical engagements include:

  • Reviewing individual investigator proposals
  • Panel‑based evaluation of research programmes
  • Methodological and feasibility assessment of applied research
  • Cross‑disciplinary evaluations involving digital methods, energy, and design

My expertise is particularly relevant for proposals involving:

  • Building performance analysis and simulation
  • Thermal/energy modelling
  • Empirical monitoring and measurement
  • Computational methods in the built environment
  • Climate‑change impacts on buildings
  • Performance‑driven design and engineering

Peer Review Services

I am deeply involved in academic peer review. However, due to the load I already have in this area I am currently not inviting further roles. For information:

Editorial Roles Include

Associate Editor, Advanced Engineering Informatics

Editorial board member for four further journals:

  • Applied Energy
  • Journal of Building Performance Simulation
  • Energy and Buildings
  • Building Simulation: An International Journal

Peer‑Review Activity

I have reviewed  over 800 manuscripts , across a wide range of built‑environment, engineering, computing, and energy journals. I have attained recognition as a top 1% reviewer in engineering and cross‑field research. I review for publishers including Elsevier, Taylor & Francis, Wiley, Springer, Cambridge University Press, and others.

I aim to provide reviews that are rigorous, constructive, and supportive of research quality.

Professional Leadership & Service Roles

In addition to examination, editorial work, and funding review, I contribute to international scholarly communities through:

  • Vice President of IBPSA (International Building Performance Simulation Association)
  • Leadership and committee roles in EG‑ICE (European Group for Intelligent Computing in Engineering)
  • Participation in scientific committees for major international conferences
  • Advisory roles for research institutes, universities, and specialist programmes
  • Organisation of conferences, symposia, and technical sessions
  • Engagement with academic strategy, doctoral education, and research quality assurance

These contributions help shape the future of building performance research and strengthen the bridge between science, engineering, and practice.
